Dorset couple wed at The Penn’s first ever wedding ceremony

30 April, 2012

Local couple Matthew and Kelly Barton became the first to get married at Pennsylvania Castle after their wedding took place at our picturesque Portland home earlier this month.

Set against the beautiful Jurassic coastline of the Isle of Portland, Matthew and Kelly, from Portland and Weymouth respectively, said their vows and tied the knot to become the first couple officially wed on our grounds.

The castle had played host to wedding receptions in its time as a hotel during the 50s and 60s, but has only recently obtained a licence to conduct civil marriage services.

The delighted groom Matthew said: “We were thrilled to discover we could get married at Pennsylvania Castle. We both enjoyed Portland when we were growing up and the castle was always one of those landmarks we looked out for as we headed towards The Bill for weekend walks with the family.

“We are just so happy to be able to take our vows in such a stunning and memorable location.”

The ceremony was conducted by Jane Dunn from Dorset Registration Service who added: “It is a pleasure to be able to conduct a wedding ceremony at a venue which is steeped in history.

“Just knowing a former king chose this venue to celebrate his happy marriage offers a particular sense of meaning to the occasion, and I am sure it will be something that Matthew and Kelly will continue to remember as they embark on their new life together.”
