Back in January we were in the midst of post-festive activity as the Estate was taken over and used as a film set. We’ve had various filming projects take place in the past but nothing like the scale or intensity of this crazy venture.
Not only was the Castle used as the principle location for Ben Wheatley’s latest masterpiece (which they bravely filmed from start to finish within a fortnight!!!) but all 50 members of cast and crew also stayed with us on site and based themselves in the comfort of the Hayloft Cafe & Bar so that we could provide on set catering for the duration of their stay.
For two weeks, the whole team worked around the clock to provide the very best service to everyone involved in making the upcoming film ‘Happy New Year Colin Burstead’ a like-minded bunch of brilliant people who made the whole experience quite unforgettable.
The hard work paid off last week when we finally got to see the finished film, premiered at The BFI London Film Festival.
After an onstage introduction from Ben himself, the film began. The premise is a big family gathering over New Year’s Eve (something we see every year at the Castle but perhaps with slightly less drama!), as the opening scenes unfolded I was momentarily transported back to that cold, grey January ‘on set’ and immediately rewarded with a fantastic portrayal of the Castle being showcased exactly as it is at that time of the year; warm, bright and inviting.
It was fascinating to see how seamlessly the whole Estate had been shot as one, an insightful vision that even those of us that know the Castle inside out would never have been able to imagine. We are incredibly excited to see the Castle featuring so prominently as a backdrop to such an intense portrayal of all kinds of family dynamics.
‘Happy New Year Colin Burstead’, featuring a whole host of familiar faces and starring our very own Pennsylvania Castle, will be shown on BBC over Christmas – we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
